[25.06.2OO2] Ethnic Uzbeks Demand An Official Status For The Uzbek Language

The national Kabar information agency reported on 25 June that the fifth congress of ethnic Uzbeks of Kyrgzystan took a decision in Jalal-Abad on 20 June to request the country leadership giving Uzbek an official status in the country. However, the request has not yet handed to authorities. The parliament granted the status to Russian last year. Fourteen percent of the country population is ethnic Uzbeks and Russians constitute 13 percent of the population.
