[27.08.2OO2] There are about 8,000 refugees in Kyrgyzstan.

Tolen Turganbaev, head of the migration department at the Foreign Ministry, announced on 27 August that there are now in the country 7,900 officially registered refugees, who have refugee status. According to him, majority of them, about 7,000, are Tajik refugees and 80 percent of them are ethnic Kyrgyz who want to receive Kyrgyz citizenship. About 700 of them have already been granted it. However, real figure of refugees is much higher. According to Turganbaev, there are about 10,000 refugees in the northern Chui province only; most of them came from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Turganbaev added that there are also about 70,000 internal migrants in the country.
