[19.09.2OO2] Public Commission Asks Extending Terms And Rights Of Constitutional Council

The public commission on constitutional reforms appealed to President Askar Akayev, members of the Constitutional Council and deputies of parliament on 19 September asking to extend terms of the council. According to the commission, discussion of the prepared amendments to the constitution should be extended until 25 October to secure involvement of more ordinary citizens and experts in the process of discussion. The commission also suggests co-opting in the council more experts. Akayev formed the 40-member council on 26 August obliging it to prepare package of amendments from 4 till 23 September. Later, seven more people were co-opted in the council.
