K.Jumaliev, vice Prime Minister, Minister for Transportation and Communication, reported that rehabilitation of Taraz-Talas-Suusamyr road, connecting the South of Kazakhstan and the North of Kyrgyzstan will start in 2004. According to him the 199-km long road will improve communication between Northwestern, Central and Southern regions of the country as well. Having conducted technical and economic assessment of the project in 2000, Islamic Development Bank will now allocate funds to finance it on preferential terms. K.Jumaliev mentioned that rehabilitation works will be conducted in stages. The first 52 km will be reconstructed in 2004.
IDB will provide $ 9 mln, that is 82% of the project cost. The Kyrgyz government will accumulate the other 17,4%. In accordance with the requirements set by the state investment program, the “grant element” of the IDB credit is equal to 45% of the aggregate amount. “All details are to be agreed upon this year”, pointed out the Minister for Transportation and Communication.
