[01.06.23] CIS Leaders Meet in St Petersburg, Discuss Cooperation

An informal meeting of leaders of Uzbekistan, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan was held on 30 May in St Petersburg on the "Silver Whisper" liner.
The heads of states discussed a number of international issues, in particular, situation in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as fighting terrorism, extremism and drug traffic.
Significant part of the meeting was devoted to issues of economic integration within the CIS, creation of free trade zone, development of cooperation in communications, transport and power engineering spheres. On results of the meeting President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma delivered a special statement on behalf of the CIS leaders.
Then events devoted to the 300-anniversary of Russia's northern capital started. More than 2,000 visitors from all over the world came to St Petersburg to witness the celebrations.
The presidents visited Admiral's Quay, where the new monument to the city's founder Peter the Great had been erected, and Isaac's Cathedral.
