Kyrgyzstan and Russia will sign an agreement in early July 2003 to transform the Kyrgyz military airfield in the town of Kant into a Russian air base.
A Kyrgyz government source told Interfax on Tuesday that talks are underway with the Russian Defense Ministry to determine the signing date. According to the source, the document will probably be signed in Kant from July 6 to 8.
The accord provides a blueprint for financing the Russian air base that will be attached to the CIS Collective Security Forces. The document also legitimizes the Russian military's status in Kyrgyzstan.
According to the source, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov is expected to arrive for the signing ceremony.
