Kyrgyz President agrees to chair ethnic groups assembly

Maintaining interethnic stability in the country is a primary task, President Kurmanbek Bakiev said at a meeting with members of the Assembly of Peoples of Kyrgyzstan today. He also said that 24 March would be made a public holiday. At the meeting, he was asked to head the assembly. At the meeting, the president displayed interest in the assembly's current situation. Members of the assembly said that it was in crisis and asked Bakiev to chair the assembly. Valeriy Vishnevskiy, head of the Slavic Foundation, stated: If in this transition period you agree to head the assembly, I think we will be able to elect deputy chairpersons on your recommendation, and implement many strategies, which I don't have time to talk about now, such as setting up councils for ethnic development and implementing the program for ethnic development in an efficient way. The president listened to opinions voiced at the meeting and spoke about ways of solving the problems. He also accepted the proposal to chair the assembly. You persuaded me. However, I thought that some people would perceive it as a step backwards from democracy if the president personally chairs the Assembly of Peoples of Kyrgyzstan. But now I understand that there will be no such attitudes. If you all are of the same opinion, I will accept your proposal. /AKIpress/
