[02.12.2OO2] Regional Court Rejects Human Rights Activist Appeal

Collegium of the Chui regional court upheld today a verdict against a human rights campaigner by the Alamedin district court. The district court fined the chairman of the Kyrgyzstan Human rights movement, Tursunbek Akun to one thousand soms (about 22 USD) for attending the protest march from the village of Baitik in the suburbs of the capital towards Bishkek on October 29, 2002. Akun pleaded not guilty. He is considering applying to the High court against the upheld verdict. He said tiday that if the appeal court in Kyrgyzstan would fail to restore of his constitutional rights for freedom of assemble, then he will apply to the UNs High Commissioner for human rights.
