[25.04.2OO2] Regional NGOs condemn governmental action to restrict press freedom

Non-governmental organizations of the southern Batken Province held on 24 April a round table discussion about the governmental decree number 20 and adopted an appeal to President Askar Akayev and the deputies of parliament elected from Batken, demanding to cancel it. Representatives of the regional administration took also part in the discussion and some participants of the meeting tried to protect the decree. The meeting on 24 April was a final meeting in the series; before, the Center for Civil Society of the International Fund for Tolerance had held several discussions in the districts and towns of the province.
Similar meeting was organized in Naryn on 24 April by the Center for Civil Society of the Counterpart Consortium. Representatives of more than 20 non-governmental organizations condemned the decree and appealed to the deputies of parliament elected from Naryn demanding to cancel it.
