Eleven Kazak citizens were killed and 18 injured early Thursday when the large bus they were riding overturned on a highway in neighboring Kyrgyzstan, the Kyrgyz Interior Ministry said.
The bus was carrying 49 vacationers returning to Almaty from a holiday at Lake Issyk-Kul when it crashed in the town of Kant, about 30 kilometers (17 miles) east of the capital Bishkek, said Kzholdoshbek Buzurmankulov, the ministry's chief spokesman. The driver missed a turn, the spokesman said.
The driver, who was hospitalized with a broken leg and rib injuries, testified that a rock hit a tire and he lost control of the bus, which veered onto the soft shoulder alongside the highway, Buzurmankulov said.
