[04.06.2OO2] French defense minister visits French troops in Kyrgyzstan for Afghan campaign

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - After touring military compounds in Kabul, France's new defense minister on Tuesday visited troops deployed in nearby Kyrgyzstan for the anti-terrorism campaign and donated military equipment and uniforms to this ex-Soviet republic.
Defense Minister Michele Alliot-Marie visited French troops who are part of the 1,900-strong force from eight countries deployed at the Manas air base near the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek for the campaign in Afghanistan. French Mirage fighter jets have used the base for flights into Afghanistan.
Alliot-Marie also met with Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev during her visit and praised his nation's support for the U.S.-led anti-terrorism operation, according to Akayev's press service.
In Kabul on Monday, Alliot-Marie said she was pleased at the morale she saw among her nation's forces serving in Afghanistan.
