[11.06.2OO2] Government estimates damage to the state from the Aksy events

Deputy Prosecutor General Kurmantai Abdiev announced in Bishkek on 10 June that damage to the state from the Aksy events was about 500,000 soms (about $10,400). Abdiev also said a person who set a fire on a house of a policeman in Kerben has also been identified, but declined to name him.
Police opened fire on a demonstration of supporters of arrested Deputy Azimbek Beknazarov in the Aksy district of southern Jalal-Abad Province on 17 March, killing five people and wounding about 20. The crowd went after it to Kerben, center of the district, and burned down a house of police officer Sherbotoev there and stoned the district police department building. The riots continued on 18 March and police shot to dead one more demonstrator.
