[12.06.2OO2] Russian defense minister arrives in Bishkek

Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov of Russia arrives in Bishkek on 12 June. He plans meeting President Askar Akayev and Defense Minister Esen Topoev on 13 June. They would discuss aspects of military cooperation between the two states as well status of the Russian troops in Kyrgyzstan and usage of the former Soviet military objects by Kyrgyzstan. It is expected that a protocol on using of the Russian seismology stations in Kyrgyzstan and an agreement on joint training of the troops would be signed during the visit.
On 14-15 June, Ivanov would take part in a meeting of the Council of Defense Ministers of CIS to be held in the resort town of Cholpon- Ata on the shore of Issyk-Kul Lake. According to the Defense Ministry, ministers of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan agreed to participate. They would discuss aspects of military-technical cooperation in CIS and plans of the council for 2003.
