[16.01.23] Russian Airbase in Kyrgyzstan to Open in May

A Russian airbase, established in the Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan, should be ready in May, the chief of Russia's Air Force Col.-Gen. Vladimir Mikhailov reported. He said that two types of warplanes and one type of training plane would be deployed at the airport, which will also host search-and-rescue units. The first Russian planes arrived at the airport in Kant, just kilometers (miles) from forces of the U.S.-led anti-terror coalition, in December. The aircraft are to be part of a rapid-reaction force being assembled in Kyrgyzstan under the aegis of six former Soviet republics that have concluded a collective security treaty. The airbase, while small, represents a significant extension of Russia's security presence in formerly Soviet Central Asia.
