[19.08.23] Kyrgyzstan Raises Gold Production 4.6%

Kyrgyzstan produced 11.143 tonnes of gold in the first seven months of 2003, 4.6% more than in the same period of last year.
The Kumtor Gold Company produced 10.359 tonnes of the gold. This was up 6.7% year-on-year and 10.4% more than targeted, Asek Balakbekov, advisor to the state-owned mining concern Kyrgyzaltyn, told Interfax.
Kumtor Gold Company, which is a joint venture between Kyrgyzstan and Canada's Cameco, has a production target of 20.891 tonnes of gold in 2003 as a whole.
Kumtor Gold Company, founded in 1992, is developing Kyrgyzstan's largest gold lode, Kumtor, with estimated reserves of 250 tonnes. The Kyrgyz government, via Kyrgyzaltyn, owns a two-third interest in the venture and Canada's Cameco holds one-third.
