[02.05.2OO2] Province officials collect money to help people suffered from landslides

Employees of the southern Osh Province administration decided to make contribution equal to monthly salary of each of them to a special fund formed to help people suffered from landslides. Also, according to Aleksey Yermolov, spokesman for the Ministry of Emergencies, a special 32-member team of the ministry works on the site now and the government prepares a special decree on giving people, left without houses, new plots of land and loans to construct new houses.
A large, slow-moving landslide destroyed about 175 houses in the Alai district of the southern Osh Province since 28 April. It covered about 160 houses in the village of Jangy-Savai first day. Local authorities had a time to dismantle about 140 houses before the landslide covered them and all the dwellers had been moved to other houses, mostly to their relatives. The 1,500-meter wide and about two-meter high landslide destroyed the local power lines too leaving 19 villages without electricity. On the preliminary estimates, damage is about 70 million soms (about $1.5 million).
