[02.05.2OO2] Heavy rains destroy homes in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - Landslides sparked by heavy rains destroyed hundreds of homes in Kyrgyzstan, causing more than dlrs 1 million in damages, a government official said Thursday.
Ismail Isakov, a deputy in the parliament, told radio station "Azattik" that he visited some of the effected villages in this former Soviet republic and found damage widespread.
He said that 174 homes were destroyed in the village of Alai, and another 160 homes were damaged in the past week in the village of Zhangi-Savai. Villagers from the damaged homes have had to move in with relatives, Isakov said.
In addition, local train lines were also disrupted, leaving 19 villages without any train service, Isakov said.
Preliminary estimates put the cost of damage at dlrs 1.5 million, he said.
