[09.05.2OO2] Protest pickets are prepared over the territories to be ceded to China

Totu Sydykova of the public committee on state borders told RFE/RL correspondent on 9 May that her committee would organize protest pickets and hunger strikes if the parliament ratifies the agreement on ceding Kyrgyz territories to China.
According to her, the committee is able to proof that the ceded territories belonged Kyrgyzstan always and the deputies of parliament, who vote for the agreement ratification are traitors.
The lower chamber of parliament plans consider and ratify the agreement, according to which about 95,000 hectares are transferred to China, on 10 May and the upper chamber set it for 14 May. President Askar Akayev signed the agreement in August 1999 without consultations with the parliament. The government handed the agreement to parliament for ratification on 2 May 2002 and Akayev announced on 7 May that it should be ratified before June. According to the constitution, only the parliament has the right to change the state borders.
