The National Security Service (NSS) announced in Bishkek on 29 May that Afghani security officials detained in Afghanistan a Kyrgyz terrorist and extradited him to Kyrgyzstan on 27 May. Kyrgyz citizen Shrealy Akbotoev was a resident of the southern Batken Province and joined the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) when hundreds of its rebels invaded into Kyrgyzstan in the summer of 1999. About 60 Kyrgyz citizens were killed during the IMU invasions in the southern Kyrgyz regions in 1999 and 2000. According to the NSS, Akbotoev had become one of the leaders of IMU and was a member of its board.
