President Askar Akayev departed to the southern Jalal-Abad and Osh provinces on 28 August. The same day, he attended a ceremony of putting the Shamaldy-Say hydro power station on the Naryn River in Jalal-Abad in full operation. Its first turbine was put into operation in 1992. Later on 28 August, Akayev arrived in Osh and visited the office of the Ministry of Ecology and Emergencies, attended an opening ceremony of a new school in the Kara-Suu district and then met some ordinary residents discussing their problems.
