[23.01.23] NATO to Bring Internet to the Kyrgyz Students

This year higher education institutions of Kyrgyzstan have free access to Internet. Association of higher educational institutions of the KR won a grant from NATO. All the necessary equipment including the satellite station will be shipped to the country from the West. The Northern Alliance will cover expenses for the satellite channel. The project duration is 2 years, till 2005. Libraries and Hospitals will have free access to Internet as well.
Grant recipients cannot use the equipment and funding provided by NATO for commercial gain. Association of Kyrgyz Universities will cover energy costs, telephone communication and salary to the personnel. Next year, secondary specialized institutions along with high schools and some non-for profit organizations will be included in the project.
After 2005 it is expected that Kyrgyzstan will be able to provide funding for the satellite channel from the internal resources. Overall, NATO grant is worth 2.5 mln dollars.
